| subject: | UUCP!!! |
To: Jeff Green BL> I've noticed that many of these internet programs are for OS/2. BL> It strikes me as rather weird. I'd have thought Windows would BL> dominate, even for sysops running a BBS. JG> Windows if fairly insignificant in the network world at the JG> moment. And yes, I've seen the figures of 156% growth in NT JG> sales last year. 156% of what though? It seems to me that business has decided that Win95/6 is such a hassle over Win31 that they may as well go the whole hog with NT. BL> Most software seems to be set up for slip-ppp accounts. UUCP is BL> a bit of an orphan... so Paul makes it his first choice! I BL> think there's a clue to Paul's mentality in there somewhere. JG> ppp/slip is used for connection to systems that are more or JG> less permanently connected. uucp is the one of the easiest ways JG> to get offline (read cheaper) news reading capabilities. Yair, I know that, but slip/ppp is by far the dominant connection, with UUCP linked into that. In fact, I thought that was what Paul intended: to run a UUCP mail system on the end of his normal ISP account. Fido was set up to save time online; the Internet is developing the other way. Even so, offline mail has other advantages. I really can't see a point in typing live... that's why God invented telephones. I used to do that back in the 50's when tetetype was really hot stuff state of the art.
