Heck, bro', you can cop a single-disc radio from Best Buy or even Radio
Schlock and replace that old double-DIN size (~92mm tall) Delco 2000 radio
in your Suburban [not taking a shot in the dark or anything, not me..]
and fill up the space below your new single-DIN (~46mm tall, as you'd ex
peck) player with a handy little compartment that holds the 2 or 3 CDs
you're crusing around town jamming with. All of this swellness only
having set you back $225 or so. Yeah, I know, you've got urchins (kids)
too--as I type on my souped-up-to-sorta-486 old Zenith 386 box..
RM> don't own a CD changer of any sort, 3-disc or otherwise. (actually,
RM> that's by choice, though. I /prefer/ a single-disc player.. )
That first single-CD rack unit was a present from my seester several years
back. I suppose I ought to call up and harangue her for giving me that
"the first bag of heroin is free" machine... it got her a lot of CDs as
birthday & Xmas presents.. stuff she hadn't heard a lot of (Ladysmith
Black Mombazo) and stuff replacing her old vinyl (Vanguard's Newport Blues
Fest & Buffy Sainte-Marie discs) and stuff I can't think of right now.
I had an acquisition-fest this week, and I'm about to go out and cop
"Gasoline Alley" if I can find it (I just start playing 'em in my head
some Saturdays--esp. if the sun's shining--and gotta move).
Got 2 Neil Youngs that replace old 8-track & tape--"After the Gold Rush"
and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" respectively.
Got the Pretenders' "Singles", but forgot that "Message of Love" (one of
my favorites) is not "Tradition of Love" (*favoriter*), and also "Ohio"
isn't on here; so I'll prob. have to cop "Pretenders" & "Pretenders II"
on CD anyway.
And got "Everybody Slides Pt 2", which gets me all the info I need to
enter the stupid Win This Dobro contest and also gets me another great,
varied collection of slide stuff (see if you've heard of any artists):
1 "Attar" - David Lindley
(I'd heard his name. This is a nice tune)
2 "Everybody Slides" -Mike Auldridge w/ Lowell George & David Bromberg
(heard M.A.'s name too. This is *great* and Little Feat-ish [no wonder])
3 "Back to New Orleans" - Frederic Koella
4 "A Man's Gotta Do What a Man's Gotta Do" - John Mooney
5 "I'm Packing Up" - Ron Thompson (a good cut)
6 "It Hurts Me Too" - John Hammond (blasphemy, but I just can't dig J.H.)
7 "Come On In My Kitchen" - Rory Block (good Rory Blues)
8 "Love in Vain" - Bob Brozman (I'm forever in Bob's debt for the job he's
done as historian of National, for his demo tape of the new Nationals, and
for his slide videos; but he plays with so many doo-dah curlicues and
semi-Hawaiian stuff that he sounds like a dentist trying to play da Blooz)
9 "Take Your Time" - Denny Freeman (Very good. I'll be looking for D.F.)
10 "Stone Pony Blues" - Michael Hendersen (OUTSTANDING! Looking harder..)
11 "Sweet Dreams" - Tom Heyman with Go To Blazes
(yep, it's the old "...tonight I'm dreaming sweet dreams about you" tune,
and this treatment of it sounds great)
12 "Fight On" - Chris Darrow
13 "It's Up to You" - Steve Kimock
14 "Sharks Ate My Wahine" - Amos Garrett [!! Hawaiian, as you'd guess]
15 "Whispering Pines" - Colin Linden
These last 4 tracks I haven't heard yet. I'll have to check out the Colin
Linden. I borrowed one of his CDs from Dominique and liked it (and his
style) for some reasons and didn't for some others.
