Please don't be too hard on typists and typewriters. Everything has its
place in the big scheme. I can still earn money typing application forms for
clients who are applying for colleges or employment.
Sometimes I can use Word to enter and edit the text, adjusting the margins
to make the text fit the space provided. I will make a practice print on a
blank sheet of paper to be sure I get the positioning right.
I will pull out the typewriter for those forms that are just too tight to
trust to the printer. Having an electric typewriter with variable pitch (10
or 12 pitch character spacing) makes it possible to cram things when
necessary. And thank goodness for correcting tape!
When we first opened our word processing business, we purchased a new
computer, laser printer, fax machine, etc., and got ready for business. Our
first job included some forms that had to be typed. We forgot to buy a
typewriter! We had to run out and buy one to finish the job.
One thing we hear from our clients who come to get forms typed is they have
usually called secretarial services all over town and "nobody wants to type
forms!" We have a niche market. (smile)
Be seeing ya!
