        I have tried this when the dos program running in Windows and
that is the only time that I have a problem with the flicker and most all
of the things you have described.  If you are running under windows then
that could be the problem or at least that has been what I found.  When
I run the dos program from dos it works fine.  I am not sure if the
problem is in the test drive also but I use qmpro on this end.
