I didn't quite understand your question ... but I'll try anyway:
In order to save variables in a document/template so they can be used after
the document is closed and then reopen, you should use the SetDocumentVar
and GetDocumentVar WordBasic Commands.
In order to change values in fields (I assume your reffering to Form
Fields), you can use GetFormResult to get the fields' value, then work on
the string you got using string functions and the ASC and CHR functions,
and finally the SetFormResult command to poke the result back in the field.
I hope I gave you a direction ...
