I just checked again to be sure.  My toolbar button inserts the date as
a field.  In my case, I want plain text, and had to create a customised
button to do it (although it doesn't insert the date directly, but
rather invokes the insert-date selection list).
Maybe we're talking about different versions of Word?  I have v6.  If
you have v6 also, then I'm at a loss to explain the difference.
