Replying to a message of JAY EMRIE to BOB ACKLEY:

EV>>>>>> It got me wondering if my friends words were
true about ALL CFLs
E>>>>> being EV>made in China so I thought I'd ask here
in the Tech Echo
E>>>>> for you all to EV>look at the packaging and see
if your brand of
E>>>>> CFLs are also made in EV>China?

JE>>>> All that I have here are made in China. Since they
contain mercury
JE>>>> I wouldn't be surprised that it is true.

TW>>> And Mercury is REQUIRED for a CFL to work.

BA>> Are you sure of that? I think it's phosphorus powder that makes the
BA>> glow. 'course, phosphorus can kill you too, just not quite as
BA>> quickly. My boss is eventually going to get into trouble with the
BA>> DEQ (state EPA) people because he puts dead fluorescent tubes in
BA>> the dumpster - which gets emptied into the landfill.

JE> What provisions does your city provide for such disposal?

I've no idea what provisions Red Oak has for such, I don't live in (or near) a city.
The county landfill here has a list of things that are taboo (computer
monitors, among
other things). There's a recycling outfit up in Council Bluffs (50+ miles)
that will take
such things - for a pretty stiff fee. Other than maintaining a list of
what they don't
want in the landfills I don't know what provisions are made for disposal of
the things
that are on the list.

When the pickup/disposal fees get up there a lot of illegal dumping occurs in rural
areas. Illegal both in the sense of what's being dumped and trespassing on other
people's property.
