I'm using some cheap off-brand ones in my ceiling fan (since it takes three), though I know they were made in China. Like you I've also heard that most of them are made there. It's likely due to the lower wages + lack of benefits + longer work hours which make for some really cheap bulbs. And that's how we're able to get them so relatively cheap now that they're more in demand, where as not too long ago they were fairly expensive. I can get a whole pack now for the same price or less than just like one used to be once upon a time. Personally I don't care much for the fact that they contain vapors and have to be disposed of in a special way (and partially since I know most folks probably don't do so or don't know to), but the only real alternative is LED. I'm pretty curious to try those, in fact, but last I checked, they still cost more. LEDs can be pretty intense sometimes to look at, as well, so I dunno how I'd like those compared to CFL. I like the light emmitted by regular incandescent bulbs better than CFL, for all that goes, but oh well.
