For the most part virtually all program/OS developers have a very good
record of backward compatibility. Granted there have been a goodly
number of cases in which that isn't so. I still run and use a dBaseIII+
program in XP. A high percentage of programs not being usable in XP were
the result of illegal calls.

Bet the farm? No way, Jose.

No, Wilk isn't one to do that. He doesn't write/compile programs.

MK> JE> I seriously doubt that one could restore the actual programs from XP
MK> JE> to
MK> JE> it's successor's equivalent programs.

I was under the impression that backups had two main purposes:
1. Give one the ability to recover grunged data in case of a disastrous
failure. This would enable one to recover and use his programs and data
if his HD totally failed - I have had to do exactly that. My HD became
unusable due to a mechanical failure. I used True Image to restore ALL
to a new HD.

2. A means of migrating his data to a new OS when changing OSs. I have
done that also. As I said earlier, present day programs rarely can be
restored to a new OS - they must be installed and then the data
migrated to the new program/HD/system..

MK>Then it isn't much consequence wrt backup/restore is it? I have no faith. The
MK>proof as to my lack of faith is all around and is readily obtainable on this
MK>very issue.

Before XP I did a complete backup to a new HD, filed the old HD as a
backup and installed the newly backed up to HD as my C: drive and away
I went. If it ran OK, I knew I was in tall cotton. XPs requiring
validation stopped that.
