On or about 01-03-06 12:53, TOM WALKER did engage JAMES BRADLEY JB> TW> Come on Now, what practical CPU upgrade do you see for a 466 and 366 JB> TW> Celeron??? JB>I know one will accept a 900MHz VIA chip, and the ATX JB>will take a Slot 1 CPU JB>(PII?) JB>Double to triple the speed - I'd say so. The first is a... TW> Tripiling the Speed of the CPU WILL NOT TRIPLE the speed of the TW> computer operation by a long ways. In fact things like memory Speed TW> and ammount, HD speed etc are FAR more important then Raw CPU speed in TW> "overall" system speed.. That's *you* po-poing the bottlenecks. With sufficient RAM, one could always run quite a bit in a RAM drive. Besides, who needs to use a swap file (Well... Often.) if there's enough of the same? I never said the throughput of data from a floppy drive to a printer would increase by two to three times. I only point out that the CPU speed can obviously double to triple before I grow tired of the toys. The platforms are more than ample to keep my curiosity fuelled, and the OS I'm stickin' to 'em is more than snappy enough for all but the most demanding power monger. It would take many thousands of dollars to supplant my ring of 'obsolete' equipment, and until I *need* the new features offered by a three thousand dollar box, I should be able to pick one up for a pittance. Sorry, Tom. YOU go buy that bright new box, and I'll pick it up for free when you're done with it. ... "Not flatter my Lord...
