Replying to a message of JAY EMRIE to TOM WALKER: W>>> JE>I was under the impression that backups had two main purposes: W>>> JE>1. Give one the ability to recover grunged data in case of a W>>> disastrous JE>failure. This would enable one to recover and use his W>>> programs and data JE>if his HD totally failed - I have had to do W>>> exactly that. My HD became JE>unusable due to a mechanical failure. W>>> I used True Image to restore ALL JE>to a new HD. TW>> True but somen programs make it very inconvinent to back up just the TW>> data easily. Mostly by Thinking THEY know better where the Data TW>> should reside then you the Operator does. I being small potatoes TW>> don't have to much data to back up but I have a bat file that drops TW>> to DOS and uses XCOPY to copy my most important Data to a Removable TW>> drive. JE> Tom, it is a gross mistake to backup JUST the data. Logically, one JE> should back up the entire C: HD. That way, if the C: drive should JE> crater, using TI for the back up program one can restore programs AND JE> data to a new HD. If one only backs up the data and t he C: drives JE> craters then one would have to totally reload all the programs and JE> then install the data. Lots of time consuming work! Actually you only need to back up the programs if you change anything. Data changes much more often than programs do. On my machines at home I keep all the software on one physical HD and all the data on another; thus the C: drive gets backed up only occasionally while the D: drive gets backed up regularly. And if need be the whole system can be restored using both backups. --- FleetStreet 1.19+* Origin: Bob's Boneyard, Emerson, Iowa (1:2905/3) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 14/0 5 140/1 106/2000 633/267 |
