from the attack of grubby fingerprints, acid rain, and west Texas dust (ask
anyone who has been to the TSP!!!).  After all, with proper care,
how often do you really need to disassemble your eyepieces for cleaning? 
The plastic lens could also be sealed between glass lenses as in a triplet.

The savings in weight would be much appreciated.  I am very myopic, and
without plastic lenses, I would need a chin support to hold my head up. I
would have neck muscles like Arnold S.  After 42 years my turned up nose is
beginning to look like a hook!!!  Even with "anti-scratch"
coatings, the polycarbonate is still too soft for my liking, but it sure
beats having 3 pounds of glass and welded structural steel on the front of
my face!
