I don't mind taking this approach on simple rigs...for example RTVing some
bars to a metal disk, and stacking more RTV'd bars on the first bars...to
test the idea of a RTV-compliant-hinge mirror cell. This is an inexpensive
experiment. Low cost, yet potentially high gain in knowledge.
However...build an entire telescope on an uproven idea? That kind of
gamble is too expensive for me. I'll gamble when I test and prototype
concepts and subassemblies. The final design will be a 'sure thing' based
on previous tests and refinements.

Too many webpages are photo albums or 'look what I did!' gestures...not

I agree, but much of the 'new knowledge' was already out there in someone
else's skull. This list is one place to look for ideas. They are free.
However be careful in evaluating the advice you get here.
