RM>> ..the Pogues' _If I Should Fall From Grace With God_ album.
DB> Sorry to but into your conversation....
No apology needed.. that's the way echomail's /supposed/ to work!
DB> I also have IISFFGWG...and I have _Waiting For Herb_.
Well then, you're in the curious position of owning both their best AND
their worst albums.. ;-) I can't say enough about _IISFFGWG_.. it's a
masterpiece, AFAIAC. _Waiting For Herb_ is OK, judged on it's own, but
compared to their earlier work, it's very weak. However, the Pogues were
able to rebound from that with the following album, _Pogue Mahone_. It's
actually a very good album.. though I still miss MacGowan!
DB> I really like them both.
Given that, you should look for _Rum Sodomy & the Lash_ and _Red Roses For
Me_. They're very, VERY strong albums, only a tick behind _IISFFGWG_. Both
are /essential/! After that, I'd recommend _Hells Ditch_, _Peace & Love_,
and _Pogue Mahone_, in that order.
DB> Have you heard anything from the new band that Shane MacGowan is in?
DB> I can't think of the name right now.
The band is billed as "Shane MacGowan and the Popes", and the album is
entitled _The Snake_. It's very good! I'd recommend it above those last
two Pogues albums that I cited, actually.
DB> Anyway, I've also become interested in Celtic music and I'm going to
DB> get one of those albums from the Cheiftans which you mentioned and see
DB> if I like them.
_Four_ is purely traditional, while _Long Black Veil_ is a collaboration
with a number of Rock musicians, and includes electric instruments. If you
want the real deal, get the Chieftains' _Four_!
DB> Here in the Baltimore/Washington DC area there are many places that
DB> have live Celtic music.
I can imagine! One of the best places in the Country for Celtic music,
I'm told, behind only Boston and NYC.
DB> Its pretty smokey, but you can sit and drink a glass or two (or 3 or
DB> 5) of draught Guiness and listen to them play. Its a good way to kill
DB> off a few hours.
You bet!
DB> Do you like The Young Dubliners at all?
Oh yes! Though I don't have a lot of their music, what I do have, I like
just fine.
... I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain to be a vegetarian.
