And thanks to accurate data and historical references in the Scott Ewart's post and relevant factors mentioned by Peter John Smith. It would be very instructive to see images made by modern equipment with well defined resolution, like CCD is, of the real objects mentioned in this thread ( specific doubles, planetary details). (In order to eliminate subjective and anecdotal contribution to the resolution and detectability issue.) Does somebody can direct us to some of such images so that we can see by ourselves where the limits are and how they look like.
