From a live Cindi Rinehart interview with Bryan Dattilo who plays Lucas on
Days of Our Lives:

C: Let's jump right in to what's going on. Well, you were let go! Tell me
    what happened.
B: I was canned! Unjustly canned! Yeah, I was let go. We could
    start off with that.
C: What happened? Why? Who?
B: I got let go, what was it? About a year and a half ago? And the head
writer/head producer at the time, Tom Langen, didn't think that Lucas
should be on the show. So they called me up one day, and they said,
"Hey, Bryan, do you have a moment?" And I was like,
"Sure!" And they
sat me down. And they're like, "You know, we're really happy with your
work. You're really doing a great job..."
C: Oh, yeah!
B: "But unfortunately, we've painted your character into a corner..." And
I was like, "Paint me out! Paint a door! Paint something! Help a
brother..." And they didn't. So I left. And then they asked me back
    when that guy was gone.
C: Which mades sense, because Ken Corday came in and said, "Uh... We need
    Lucas back!"
B:
C: Were you hesitant about returning, or just thrilled that they asked you
    back?
B: I was shocked that I left, initially, that they asked me to leave. So
to get asked back was a big compliment. Get the little call from the
owner and he said, "We need you!!" "We don't
have a show without you! Come back!!" I'm like, "All right, Dude, I'll
    save your show."
C: Well, you've got a major storyline right now, with the killer thing
going on. Caroline has now become the fourth victim. We know there's at
least three more. That's a fact. That would be Roman, Cassie, and...
    Who am I missing? John.
B: John!! You can't kill John!
C: No, Tony. This is kind of a two-fold question. Do guys, first of all,
know who else is going? And two... Or is there a big feeling of
    secrecy around the set?
B: Big feeling of secrecy. We're all kind of in the dark, walking around
with flashlights. It's weird. They don't really tell us anything. We
kind of snoop around and try to get the pinks, try to get the blue
pages and get the outlines. And , "No! Get out of
there!" And
they kick us out of the office and stuff. Becuase they know we're going
to do stuff like and they really want to keep it under
wraps. It's unfortunate when people who have worked there for so long,
who are such good people. And they're great actors and actresses. That
    they are... in the coffin.
C: I've never seen three coffins in one church. I mean, these bodies have
got to be way gone by now!
From Audience: I was wondering, by March they're going to kill off three
more people. And you don't have any hint at all who it might be?!
B:
From audience: I hope it's not going to be your character...
B: It better not be! I've got bills to pay!
C: Well, I was wrong. It can't be Roman. He wouldn't kill his own
    mother...
B: No, he wouldn't.... Would he?
C: Oh, there you go, making me nuts!!
B: No, he wouldn't. Roman, no he wouldn't do that.
C: Sami and Lucas are one of our favorite couples, all-time. I haven't
decided whether I love it when they're loving, or love it when they're
arguing. But let's watch when they're really hot:

C: I love that scene! I know you love working with Allison. What's the
greatest part about working with her? What kind of chemistry do you
    guys have?
B: She's just open to anything! Like, during rehearsals or during improvs.
She's great. She's always listening and in the moment. So you can kind
    of ad-lib and change gears.
C: Do they let you ad-lib?
B: Yeah, I was ad-libbing all through that scene, all through that speech.
A couple of those, I threw in ad-libs. And she's always right there.
She's never thrown. She's always in the moment, so she's awesome to
    work with. Plus, she's hot!
C: Yeah!
From Audience: Is there ever going to be another Lucas and Sami again? You
    can tell there's chemistry there.
B: There's chemistry there, yeah.
From Audience: Does Lucas still have feelings for her?
B: Of course! She's a hottie! Yeah, he does, becuase he wants a family. He
wants some stability in his life. And if he can get that all
together... Except they break a lot of things. It's that chemistry. I
think that it would be good. He obviously has true feelings for her.
But then they have so many obstacles, just like any other relationship,
you kind of have to overcome those. So, we'll see if they can do that.
From audience: How do you keep yourself in shape?
B: I bike a lot now. I'm into mountain biking. So I don't drive anywhere.
C: How much are you like Lucas? Are you a bad boy, too, in real life?
B: No...
C: Ah, I'm looking at those eyes and I'm thinking, "yeah".
B: You use a little of yourself in your character. But I'm not that bad.
He's kind of self-absorbed, and a little egotistical, and a little
manaical, and a little selfish, and all those things. I think I'm a
    little more generous. I'm a Leo, I'm a giver!
C: I know that you're not the killer, because I know that you're staying.
B: Thank you Cindi! My kid can eat for the next two years...
