Because there was a conflict with the installed os2 driver at that time.

The keyword is bi-directionallity. In goold old times, the printer sent 
data to the computer and that was it then. Bi-directionallity not only 
means the operating system sends code and instructions to the printer, 
but holds the printer in a close grip, as anyone should expect from 
anything Windy.
