Here is my review of WCW Nitro (by THQ) for the Playstation...
Graphics -- I thought the graphics were a definite improvement over the
graphics of "WCW Vs The World". In WCW Vs The World, the characters looked
pretty fake. In WCW Nitro, they look almost life-like. Animations were real
good...Scott Hall's "fist-pumping" taunt looked so real you'd swear that that
was actually Hall doing that (and in a way it was...I think all the wrestlers
were filmed and digitized into the game, thus the wrestlers looked close to
life). The FMV clips were real good, although the full-screen FMV clips were
a little grainy. The other FMV clips were the rants which took up a small
space on the screen. Since the FMV rants took up such little space, the FMV
looked crisper.
Sound -- There are the grunts and groans, the smacks of Nature Boy Chops, and
several vocal taunts (Sting does his trademark "OWWWWWW" during his taunt,
Macho Man Savage does his trademark "OHHHH YEEEEEAHHHH" during his taunt).
The wrestlers also speak during the FMV rants, and the sound ranges from
crystal clear to audio tape quality. For some reason Hollywood Hogan's rant
sounded like he was 10 ft. away from the studio microphone. There was also a
little commentary from WCW announcers Tony Schiavone, Bobby "The Brain"
Heenan, and "Mean" Gene Okerlund. Finally, the music in the game was pretty
good, but I wish they had allowed the wrestlers' theme songs to be played
during the matches. If you're looking for wrestlers' theme songs in this
game, don't...the only theme songs in the game were the WCW Monday Nitro
theme song and the nWo "porno" theme song (the nWo's original theme song, not
Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile").
Control -- You have to get used to the controls. There are so many moves in
this game it will take a while to learn how to use them all. Some moves are
easy to execute, while others are a pain in the "you-know-where" to execute.
Fun Factor -- This game is, IMHO, a big improvement over WCW Vs The World. At
first there are 16 characters to be selected in the game, but later on you'll
be able to control other characters like the lovely Miss Elizabeth.
Apparently the majority of the hidden characters are either managers or
valets. In addition to Miss Elizabeth, there may be other managers in the
game like Jimmy Hart, Miss Jacquelyn, James Vandenburg, Ted DiBiase, Vincent,
Eric Bischoff, and so on. There are singles matches (exhibition and
tournament), tag matches (1p vs com. or 1p vs 2p), different rings and sets
(the rings/sets include Nitro, nWo, WCW, Souled Out, Slamboree, Fall Brawl,
Great American Bash, and Halloween Havoc). You can have your own PPV event on
here with these different rings/sets. Each wrestler has his or her (in case
you're controlling Miss Elizabeth or maybe Jacquelyn) trademark move like the
Diamond Cutter, Scorpion Deathlock, Outsider's Edge, German Suplex, Torture
Rack, Chokeslam, and so on. The one thing I could've done without was Alex
Wright's taunt...he does his pseudo-disco "armpit dance". I hope Disco
Inferno is a hidden character. He's a riot.
