I have a 5700 but have never had a problem like that.  But it doesn't get a 
lot of use any more since I bought a D40X.  Check out Nikon USA web site 
http://www.nikonusa.com/Service-And-Support/Service-Advisories/index.page 
There is a service advisory for the 5700 as well as other models for image 
quality problems. Maybe you are in luck.

"While only a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 3500, 4500, 5000, 5400, 5700 
and SQ digital cameras are affected by this advisory, if your camera 
presents symptoms that can include (1) images with a strong color tint, (2) 
images that are totally black and/or (3) images with visible defects, Nikon 
will, upon confirmation that the problem is associated to this Service 
Advisory, service your camera free of charge."

If not then for the typical cost of repair you may as well buy a new camera 
which is less expensive and has more features, more memory and a lot faster 
then the 5700.
