I use 5 micron as a final grade, after 12 micron.  I cannot compare, but it
works fine.  Many use 9.  The polish time increases, but the risk of
scratching with the real fine grits, which some report, diminishes using 9.

Might increase your polish time 10%?  20%?

Do not confuse fluoride toothpaste with fluorite.  Using toothpaste will
not make an APO.
