There is a small button battery with a yellow vinyl cover and 2 lead wires
underneath the main battery for the bios. I wonder if that is dead it will
cause this problem? It's definitely old enough to be dead. I've ordered a
replacement battery for my T21 from 
http://www.batteryrefill.com/index.phtml
as my battery suddenly shortened it's runtime by about half. I guess I
should look to replace that button battery too.
