If you have an Intel Chipset with the ICH8R (the "R" is
important) you need to 
turn off "AHCI" --> set it to "DISABLED". Then SATA
is turned off and it's 
running in EIDE mode. There might be some successor of the ICH8R that show the 
same problem.

Do you have a mixed environment of EIDE Harddrives and SATA DVDRW?
This might also cause some problems but I had it the other way around (SATA HDDs 
and EIDE DVDRW).

It would be interesting to know which mainboard and which chipsets you have.
