Well, before trying one of the SCSI cards in non-ECC mode, I decided
to try switching RAM modules around. The result is that both of the
two modules will allow the machine to boot if they are in either
socket of one pair but not in sockets belonging to the other pair --
but even when the machine boots, I get a "Memory test failed" message.
So it looks as though the mobo is dead. And in this case I don't think
that Asus should be difficult about the OS I am using, because it
never gets to the point of loading any OS now.
But I guess I should check the RAM modules in another machine. I hope
that a bad board hasn't messed up the RAM modules, which will then
mess up a good motherboard.
