\  Aart, the reason for the channels is to keep the tiles in contact with
the glass while grinding.
     I don't think dental stone will harm the glass during the grinding
process until you get to finer
micron grits. You are basically using a solid tool if the surface of the
tiles is the same as the dental
stone. You may have a problem of having the tool stick to the mirror since
no air or water can release
through channels between the tiles. I have no experience here, I have never
tried this.. anybody got
