Interesting that the problem is only on the write.  You say the drives have 
been tested. Did you do it on this m/b?
If not:  Run a drive tester but prior reset all settings to the m/b defaults 
having made a note of all the settings.
Yes, that also means any speed changes to Ram and the CPU, all standard 
defaults and let us know the results.

Also check the cables between the drives and the IDE controller are they new 
ones and to the FULL spec? Regardless have a very good look at then throughout
there length and look for kinks of any description if in doubt change them. If
you are using ribbon cables change to round and retest.

This could be a cable issue and on a modern drive it doesn't take a lot, i.e.,
more resistance than it should be could do it so don't use cheap cables when 
testing (this does not mean to say that you have to spend $20 more for one 
than the ones you have) only that they are good.
