OK, so then it will be either the chipset or the drivers. Do you have 
Linux or Windoze also on the system (if not boot a Linux Live-CD to 
test). If the Audio is still bad from the other OS, it's the chipset and 
as you questioned, perhaps a PCMCIA or even external USB audio may be 
the answer (although OS/2 support may become an issue). If sound is good 
from (say) Linux on the same system, you're looking at less than perfect 
OS/2 drivers.
