| subject: | [OS2HW] Need a quiet, cheap, printer with low cost consumables ... |
Hi Group,
I am unable to get out of the house I live in alone, because of my
double-vision (illegal to drive in this condition), so I'm unable to
visit what are rapidly becoming distant computer stores (80 mile round
trip), with the recent closure of both the nearby (10 miles round-trip)
ones within weeks of one another.
I live in a village of 206 factory-built homes (2-3 bedroom, aluminum
clad, elevated about 18" above the block they sit on). Residents own the
homes, but pay ~50% of their Social Security Age Pension as site-rent to
the village management, and which increases by 3% per annum, or more if
the cost-of-living-index is >3% p.a.
Unfortunately for neighbours, the "houses" are only separated from one
another by about 20ft, in all directions, and sound-proofing is
non-existent. Many of the residents are in their 70s-80s-90s (used to be
55 y.o. was the minimum age to purchase one, but apparently that's
recently dropped to 50y.o's), so one has to be careful not to make much
noise here.
Having finally decided, after a break of over a decade, to get back
into assembler programming, I am going to need a cheap printer with
cheap consumables, as I'm anticipating I'll be running off a multitude
of multi-page assembler listings. I last used a couple of dot-matrix
printers for these tasks, a Texas Instruments 855, and an Epson FX-??.
The Epson particularly was very noisy, and vibrated badly, but was
faster than the older TI, which had plug-in font family cartridges - but
I chucked out both (actually I had my son-in-law do it for me) when I
had my decade-overdue Spring Clean of the house.recently.
I only get to "not be a hermit" either for one or occasionally two hours
in each two week period, when the State HomeCare Service takes me out
shopping - by necessity for food! Because there's always a preceding and
following client to be serviced time is strictly limited to either 60 or
90 minutes, which leaves no leeway after discounting the time for the
round trip - so I can't get out to physically inspect - listen to - etc.
HP used to have a quiet thermal printer that ran off a teletype-style
roll of paper. Do these things still have current versions?
All suggestions gratefully received.
BTW - most of the output will eventually be junked - sooner than later -
it's only an intermediate stage!
Regards,
Mike
