From Clive Milne:

Sorry for the late response on this subject. Clive should include himself
on any list for structural expertise. All anyone has to do is look at some
of his innovative, all metal telescopes to verify that fact.

My "intuitive understanding" comes from years of working with
the subject; as a teenager, working summers in my uncles construction
company, and later as an architectural engineer. A very good basic
understanding for structures can be gained from any book on statics, or, if
you are a glutton for punishment, from the AISC Handbook (American
Institute for Steel Construction). EVERYTHING you'll ever need to
know.........PLUS!!!

My only "rebuttal" to Clive regarding strut sizing is that most
stores around here stock 1 inch diameter (generally 0.063 inch wall)
aluminum tubing. 3/4 inch is generally a special order at extra cost. My
experience with aluminum suppliers is generally bad...they don't want to
fool around with small orders. Whether the savings of a pound or two is
vital to a design is up to the individual.

Thanks for the compliment, Clive. But just as Tom said, much of my
knowledge comes from experience and study. No magic to opening a book and
reading up on the subject!
