Hi Rob
The grooves don't need to be wide but should be a
minimum of 1/16 to 1/8 inch deep. I recut my grooves with a saw blade and
running water. The saw could be a fine wood saw, such as is used with most
mitter box saws or a coarse hacksaw blade. 10 to 15 teeth per inch seems wo
work well.
Use light pressure and keep water running over the
surface to keep the fresh chips from sticking. Use less pressure when the
lap is cold and more when hot. It is a kind of feel thing. You don't want
to chip out large chunks.
