Hello Rob., -=> Quoting Rob Mccart to Peter Coggon <=- RM> Those are definitely complicated difficult issues to resolve. RM> If treaties had been adhered to from the start there would be some RM> sort of order but too much has happened to go back and just hand RM> over everything that they were originally promissed, such as the RM> entire Grand Valley. The Brant Tract Grant, issued to Chief Brant, was acknowledged by both sides, as some parts of the parcel were given freely by Chief Brant to groups and individuals, sold and otherwise. The issue in Caledonia is of the government back then, takeing over as self-imposed trustee, to borrow for things like road allowances etc, and then it was just as neatly forgotten, as was the Ipperwash Provincial Park, which was donated to Canada for the war effort by the First Nations. The war has been over for ??? and all efforts have been in vain to get back their loan of the property to the Federal Government, who I guess in their "wisdom" gave it to the Porovince as a park...and NOT to it's rightfull owners. All native people I have met, had never said they wanted all turned back to before the Europeans arrived. They have won in court on many issues, we ever got large sums but in some cases due to religious beliefs, they have not and will not settle unless certain parcels given them and guaranteed by treaty are returned. RM> There's no question the natives got ripped off, as did most of our RM> ancestors in one way or another in the distant past or they'd never RM> have left their original countries to start over here. None of us RM> can go back and change how our ancestors were treated but some sort RM> of settlement needs to be made to end the ongoing conflict.. Yes. I drilled the local Tory here on his leader's comments that he was going to jail the natives. For what? Canada's laws? Doubt it... mohawks were never beaten in battle, and not conquered and never surrendered land. They were granted this land, in the 18th centrury...those treays the new Canada agreed to abide by and thus Mr. Tory going to arrrest a citizen of another nation is a retard with a loose tongue looking to heighten tensions. I think of the people in Caledonia that bought their land, unknowning now part of the frace of the Province and Ottawa washing their hands, when they know darn well the deeds are bogus in some cases. Mr. Tory never answered my email...and I doubt he ever will...just a ploy to get votes in Caledonia. ttfn Peter ...
