Did you have "defaultroute" in /etc/ppp/options?

To configure the default route manually:

root{at}denim: ifconfig ppp0
            -------------
ppp0: flags=8151 mtu 1500
        inet 203.20.114.2 --> 203.20.114.254 netmask 0xffffff00

root{at}denim: route add default 203.20.114.254
            --------------------------------

Very important you set up the pap-secrets file then.

Not with pppd.

ppp uses pap.secret, pppd uses pap-secrets.

The guys putting together FreeBSD decided in their infinite wisdom to
include two types of PPP daemon, and stick the config files in the same
dir. :)

Cheers.
