subject: Ontario Votes 2007

Hello Rob and Everyone reading...

This might be a first for this NET ... But after reading all
of what Rob posted...I am in total agreement, and I can
offer up no opinion or counter "pro" or "con" ...

Ah shucks :)

PC> Well Ontario has finished voting...

PC> This year I voted, and I found I was in the minority as only 47%
 >of eligble voters bothered to go to advanced polls and vote for
 >their local candidate as well the Referundum on MMP.

PC> Now for stats .... Record people not voting was 53 % and there
 >was reports of poll problems, and many must have walked out, as well
 >polling stations over yonder well out of the way...etc. They say
 >the record is 55% set in 1925.

RM> The numbers being thrown around vary a bit but they all agree with
 RM> what you basically said.

RM> What CTV National News said was that for the last provincial election
RM> the voter turnout was 56.4% and was the lowest in history until then.
RM> This election the turnout was 52.4%. Given the huge Liberal majority
RM> it sounds like the Conservatives are staying home.
RM> A two term majority Liberal gov't also hasn't happened in 70 years.
RM> It appears the Conservatives did a good job of messing things up
RM> when they were last in power..

RM> They also said that it's not so much the Liberals gaining ground as it
RM> was the Conservatives Losing gtound, but the lost Conservative seats
RM> didn't go to the Liberals, they went to the other smaller parties like
RM> the NDP and Green party.

RM> The Mixed Member Parliament number you mentioned was that 63% voted
RM> against (37% for) changing the voting system. I believe they needed
RM> a minimum of 75% to vote FOR the change before it would be adopted.

RM> In any case that's just numbers. The end result, if a little more
RM> dramatic than anticipated, was pretty much what I expected going in.
