Tom,

Try this.  Put a piece of paper where your lower working surface (mirror or
tool) usually goes.  Tape a not too sharp pencil to the drive pin or
equivalent location on your machine.  Lower the pencil into contact with
the paper and start up the machine.  After a couple of minutes, you should
be able to see periodicities that would be hard to analyze mathematically.
