Transferance, perhaps?  If someone needs to pretend to believe in
gods in order to escape the unavoidable eventuality of their own
death and pretend to be happy about it, perhaps that someone also
hates the fact that there are millions of people around him/her
that doesn't feel the need to contrive gods to play pretend with.

It's funny, the happiest, most lively people I've ever known as
a group have been Wiccans and Pagans, people who may adopt or
discard deity constructs as needed.
