yes..

PAP is in use at the isp...
I've since had to re-install the hole os (operator stuff up on a major
scale, seing how i'm new to freebsd [and totaly lost]). Now the system
won't even make a call out with ppp..
Doing the following in order does get a response from the modem though:
ppp
term
atz
any chance you can attach some of your files to a email or netmail, so that
I can see what I'm doing wrong.
