FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Saving Lives Day by Day -
The St. Louis Fire Department Way
St. Louis, MO , April 10, 1998—
A St. Louis man is alive today because of the St. Louis Fire department's
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program.
Mr. Eugene Dillon was attending Sunday services at the Lively Stone Church
of God on March 22, 1998 when he suddenly collapsed. An off duty St. Louis
Firefighter, Mr. Shelton Banks and a nurse, Mrs. Berni Cochran initiated CPR.
Firefighters arrived minutes later and found Mr. Dillon not breathing and
without a heartbeat. The AED delivered a series of cardiac defibrillating
jolts and promptly restored Mr. Dillon's pulse. Care provided by the
firefighters and paramedics supplied his brain and vital organs with oxygen
and prevented his heart from returning to the initial lethal arrhythmia.
"I am thanking God for everyone who helped us", stated Mr. Dillon's wife,
nn.
"I give credit to the Fire Department for arriving so quickly."
St. Louis Fire Department, Engine Company 10 and Paramedic Company 11 will
take Mr. Dillon home in a fire truck on Saturday, April 11, 1998 at 4:00
.m.,
to continue his life of independence.
The AED program was funded through a grant form the Medtronic Foundation's
HeartRescue program. Medtronic is a leading manufacturer of implantable and
interventional therapies. This grant allowed for the purchase of forty
Survivalink AED's, equipping every piece of fire apparatus in the city of
St. Louis.
