The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Communications
Commission warned that digital television might interfere with such
hospital devices as heart monitors. Now that TV stations are starting
to occupy formerly unused TV channels while making the transition to
digital TV, they are broadcasting digital signals capable of disrupting
medical telemetry systems that have been allowed to use unoccupied TV
channels. That sort of interference occurred earlier this March, in
Dallas. Although no one was harmed, the station involved stopped its
digital broadcasts. The FCC said it would ask manufacturers of medical
telemetry devices to help customers determine whether they may be
affected by digital TV transmissions and, if so, to help them find
vacant channels. It will also set up a World Wide Web site with
information about which channels can be used safely for digital
transmissions in each U.S. geographical area.
