Replying to a message of PETER COGGON to BOB ACKLEY: PC> It seems, they're going for the bailout, Bob.... Here in CANADA PC> and the USA. Locally here we have lost a supplier, to now 50% of PC> the town out of a job. Well, Red Oak, IA, used to have a company called Romech. They made seats for US autos. The company owner moved the jobs to Mexico, which doesn't have the picky OSHA rules and where it doesn't have to provide the workers with safety equipment - like welding helmets for welders, the poor sods have no eye protection and they're doing arc welding. The Romech plant is, of course, closed and vacant now, and about 400 people no longer have jobs there. Just up the road from Romech is a Parker Hannifin plant that makes hydraulic pressure hoses. On January 6th they're letting 50 people go due to lack of work for them. Down the road in Shenandoah, IA, the Eaton plant laid off about 150 people two months ago due to lack of work for them, they make transmission parts there. That's just about 600 jobs gone from two towns that have a combined population of about 16,000. --- FleetStreet 1.19+* Origin: Bob's Boneyard, Emerson, Iowa (1:300/3) SEEN-BY: 10/1 3 34/999 120/228 123/500 140/1 222/2 226/0 249/303 250/306 SEEN-BY: 261/20 38 100 1404 1406 1410 1418 266/1413 280/1027 320/119 396/45 SEEN-BY: 633/260 267 285 712/848 800/432 801/161 189 2222/700 2320/100 105 200 SEEN-BY: 2905/0 @PATH: 300/3 14/5 140/1 261/38 633/260 267 |
