Richard,
I didn't word that clearly. The channels have barely changed. They were
wide open. I'm pretty handy with the single-edge razor on keeping them
open (actually I don't see what all the fuss is about in cutting channels;
it seems easy). The lap was hard as a rock and not going anywhere in
shape. Even hot pressing wasn't working anymore. I didn't try leaving the
radio on Art Bell, but then again, he's better at hardening things.
A new lap has been poured, but not channeled. I'll let you guys know if it
solves the problem.

Channels closed? Don't call Art Bell for channeling advice! Just heat a
large chef's knife over the stove and cut into the channels with the BACK
edge of the blade. Wipe the molten pitch off the knife and cut again.
Several cuts will restore your channels with minimal disturbance of the
working surface of the lap. Save the pitch encrusted paper towels for BBQ
or fireplace starters.

edge contact
After 2 days of 15lbs pressing on my little 4.25" lap, the channels
have barely closed: time to redo the lap with softer pitch (not sure if the
wife'll let me use turpentine in the house). Following Mr. Hunter's
advice, I put micronetting between the lap and mirror, and it pressed
completely into the middle of the lap, but on the outside edge, it is only
partially pressed into the pitch, so I have concluded that perhaps my
inability to correct the turned edge was due to a lack of lap contact in
the outer zones plus the fact that my lap was about 85% of the mirror
diameter. I think I'll try to make the next one closer to the actual
mirror diameter. I'll let you know if that fixes things.
Bound and determined to clean up that edge,
=Matt
