Some numbers: original text: (squeezed text) uuencoded squeezed text: text characters: 96674 (47602) 65611 compressed bytes: 32533 55205 If the text were transmitted as text characters, then he has certainly achieved his (apparent) goal of reducing transmission time, BUT if "compress" is used, then there is a significant increase (approximately 3 minutes at 1200 bps, if my calculator batteries have held out..) caused by this extra effort.
